Is Ladies’ Night Sexist?

Imagine paying full price then learning that another group of people get in free or at a significant discount solely on the basis of their gender. Sounds sexist? Well, that’s exactly why one lawyer is suing night clubs who have ladies’ night (and lost):

Men sick of having to pay full price at bars and nightclubs where women get discounts on "ladies’ night" have failed to win sympathy from a federal appeals court, which ruled this week that such promotions don’t violate the U.S. Constitution.

A self-described "anti-feminist" lawyer, Roy Den Hollander, sued over ladies’ night drink specials at several New York clubs, arguing that they discriminate against men. The case went to the 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals in Manhattan, where judges ruled against Den Hollander on Wednesday.

"The guys are paying for girls to party. I don’t think that’s fair," Den Hollander told the New York Daily News, vowing to escalate his case to the U.S. Supreme Court. "It’s a transfer of money from the wallets of guys to the pocketbooks of girls."

In the past, people in Brazil have tried to smuggle cell phones into prisons using pigeons and toy helicopters. Recently, a boy was caught outside of the walls of a Brazilian prison trying to shoot cell phones into the yard using a bow and arrow:

Police say a 17-year-old teen was detained after he shot arrows with cell phones attached over the walls of a prison in southern Brazil to inmates waiting on the other side.

Authorities say the boy was caught after one of the arrows he launched struck a police officer on the back. The officer was not seriously injured because the cell phone was tied to the tip of the arrow and softened the impact.

Police Lt. Mauricio Cravo told RBS TV that a local gang hired the teen, giving him a professional bow and training him how to use it.

Anti-Theft Device: Balls of Orange Paint

(Video Link)

If you go into some Japanese stores, the clerks have fist-sized orange balls behind the counter. No, the are not for sale. They’re balls of paint that clerks throw at robbers so that police can more easily identify them:

The orange orbs you observed are called bohan yo kara boru (anticrime color balls). Basically, they’re paint balls — plastic spheres filled with brightly colored liquid pigment. But unlike the fun-and-games variety, these balls are kept on hand in case of a stickup. The idea is to lob one after a robber and mark him to improve the chance of an arrest.
